Nuclear Power

Nuclear power is the use of sustained nuclear fission to generate heat and electricity. Nuclear power plants provide about 6% of the world's energy and 13–14% of the world's electricity, with the U.S., France, and Japan together accounting for about 50% of nuclear generated electricity. In 2007, the IAEA reported there were 439 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world, operating in 31 countries. Also, more than 150 naval vessels using nuclear propulsion have been built.

We can use nuclear power, however, the problem of nuclear power is generated waste is highly toxic, very dangerous. The nuclear power must be safely stored. In addition, there are some costs associated with the safety of nuclear power, if the accident occurred, the environmental consequences would be disastrous.

Because of nuclear power there are many disasters around the world. I have already watched the video about nuclear power in class. This video suggests. China has a lot of problems due to nuclear power. The influence of several villages because of they are too closed to some nuclear power stations. They are easy to get cancer, because the land, water and food are polluted by nuclear power. After, eat and drink, it can easily cause disease.

The video also showed they have complained to the government. However, the government does not give them a reply. The government has been aware of this issue, I think because they are more careful about money than those people.

I think we should use some of the sustainable development of energy, such as solar and wind power. This can protect the environment. Although their use is not wide enough, but I believe due to the development of the technology, these new energies must be widely utilized.

Sustainable Development

Sustainable development is a pattern of economic growth in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come. The concept of sustainable development is often broken out into three constituent parts: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability and sociopolitical sustainability. Today I am going to talk about environmental sustainability.

Our development is not sustainable, because deforestation, overpopulation and global warming.

Deforestation, it refers to the loss of natural forest logging and burning. Deforestation due to agriculture, logging operations for timber and urbanization. Farmers to create space for the land to grow crops, grazing animals; felling of trees to manufacture paper and other related products; also urbanization, overpopulation need more land to build the building. Although forest cover about 30% of the earth, the world's rain forests could completely disappear hundred years at the current rate of deforestation.

More important is that overpopulation is one of a major cause of environmental degradation, overpopulation lead to increased pollution, use of resources, especially non-renewable resources, and need more space for people to live and work. It will cause a lot of problems.

Rising sea levels due to global warming, causing flooding in low-lying areas. Another 40% of the increase in storm activity and the extinction of wildlife species. Global warming is about the past 50 years, especially since the 1980s, the increase in temperature has been found all over the world. This is caused by the increase of carbon dioxide due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels. The most the country widely used fossil fuel transport. In contrast, there are many types of renewable energy, such as wind and solar energy are constantly replenished and will never run out.

But now we should be aware of this problem, we should leave a good environment for our future generations. Therefore, we can try to deal with. We can control the population, reduce pollution and carbon dioxide emissions and prevent deforestation.

Now, we invented renewable resources, in order to reduce the use of non-renewable resources, non-renewable resources are scarce and non-renewable resources such as fuel emissions harmful to the environment, it can be caused by global warming, soil erosion and air pollution. Therefore, some of the new power has been widely used, such as wind power, solar power, wave power generation. Is more important is that the waste can be recycled, such as paper, plastic. The same time, we can also reuse water, because it is scarce, for example, we can use the water to wash vegetables and wiping the floor, then we can use the water last, we can use it to rinse cotton printing cloth. In this manner, it can be more sustainable.

Development is something that is essential for the survival of human beings. So as long as people know how to keep development sustainable, and understand how to apply it in the developmental progress, it will help humanity to keep on evolving.

Review of ‘Tsunami:the aftermath’

Tsunami: The Aftermath is a television mini-series that was broadcast in two parts in 2006. It dramatizes the events following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and the resulting tsunami in Thailand. It was filmed in Phuket and Khao Lak, Thailand from April to June 2006. Phuket and Khao Lak were two of the worst hit areas in the country in the December 26, 2004 disaster.

I heard this tsunami before. However, after I watched this video, my feeling is different. I felt the serious consequences of the tsunami to people, it can destroy everything. I think this video is more want to tell us what happened after the disaster, not the process. It showed the worried and sad of people when they lost their families in the disaster. I think this is difficult to accept.

I was most impressed the couple who loss of their daughter. In fact, I think the wife should be calm at that time. She should not accuse her husband, because I believe that husband is also very self-blame, and he also does not want their daughter missing. The wife accused her husband is useless. I think the wife is trying to escape from the fact that their daughter's disappearance.

For social impact, from the video I understand the different cultures between different countries. The island is very beautiful to attract a lot of tourists to go on vacation, but no one can imagine that there will have a tsunami. After the disaster, different countries have different ways to deal with dead bodies, those tourists do not agree with the Thais burning bodies. There are journalists in reporting the news. In fact, this is the cultural difference, but if it was reported, the society will have a great impact.

For the economic impact. This disaster will have enormous impact of tourism in Thailand. As tourism is one of the main industry in Thailand, it is the damage to the economic infrastructure. I think there will be a lot of people did not want to go, because they are afraid the tsunami will happen again in Thailand. The economic loss will be enormous.

After watching this video. I think everyone should know we must strengthen the early warning system and everyone should know the signs before this disaster, so that we can have more chances of survival. Also the government needs to prepare more medical resources and a perfect solution measures, so that we can reduce losses.

Reflection of the Cove

The Cove is a 2009 documentary film that analyses and questions Japan's dolphin hunting culture. The migrating dolphins are herded into a cove where they are netted and killed by means of spears and knives over the side of small fishing boats.

In fact, before watching this video in the school, I have watched it three times, this is the fourth time I watched The cove, but still shed tears, especially when I  saw the sea turned red and when I heard those dolphins’ sound. And all my mind thought about these Japanese are very cruel.

In the movie, I know that the Japanese in order to make more money, they sales dolphin meat as whale meat. But they did not think that dolphin meat is harmful to the body, excessive mercury content of dolphin meat.

At first, I am very angry with the Japanese who killing dolphins and whales, I think dolphins are intelligent and cute. And I think The event of killing dolphins and whales should be banned strictly in Taiji Japan.

But after I watched a few times, I think it was Japan's culture, I feel that others do not have a right to force  them to stop killing dolphins and whales because the different country has different culture.

However, I think that the Japanese should have a limit as to how many dolphins and whales it kill due to the danger of dolphins and whales being extinct. The film highlights the fact that the number of dolphins killed in the Taiji dolphin hunting drive is several times greater than the number of whales killed in the Antarctic, and claims that 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed in Japan every year. If they kill the dolphins continuously , dolphins will become extinct in a short period of time.

Reflection of South park whale wars

In fact, I don not like write a review about any video or article. Because different people have different ideas. Even for myself, I have different ideas about a video, sometimes my ideas are absolute opposite ideas.

Such as my review of south park whale wars. After I watched this video, I have opposite ideas of this video. On one hand, I think the Japanese killing a lot of whales and dolphins are very cruel. This is not right. On the other hand, I think that this video has not any actual effect. With the people use chicken and cows instead of whales and dolphins at the last part, I think that is not correct. I am really confused. In fact, they are all the life, I really do not know why they killing of dolphins and whales are illegal. However, it is normal to kill chickens and cows.

From whole video, I think they exaggerate how Japanese kill whales and dolphins. However, we cannot because of this video believe that all Japanese people are so cruel.

Although, the whole video is so exaggerated, but we also cannot deny that part of the Japanese killing a lot of whales and dolphins, for the ecological environment, they must control the number of killing whales and dolphins.

Why study geography?

From our lecture I know geography is Geography is the study of the Earth and its lands, features, inhabitants and phenomena. Contemporary Geography is an all encompassing discipline that seeks to understand the Earth and all of its human and natural complexities – the process of how things have evolved.

My own understanding is that geography is the study of the earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is, quite simply, about the world in which we live.

Geography is unique in bridging the social sciences (human geography) with the natural sciences (physical geography). Human geography concerns the understanding of the dynamics of cultures, societies and economies, and physical geography concerns the understanding of the dynamics of physical landscapes and the environment. Geography is, in the broadest sense, an education for life and for living. Learning through geography – whether gained through formal learning or experiential through travel, fieldwork and expeditions – helps us all to be more social and environmentally sensitive, informed and responsible citizens and employees.

For me I like any kinds of outdoor activities, climbing, diving. These activities can let me stay away from cities. In other words, this can let me closer to nature, to fell the mysteries of nature. But these kinds of activities are dangerous. If I know some geographical knowledge, so it will be much safer. It is very useful for me .
